LESSON 7, LETTER SIGN

###Sign:

Letter sign

Dots 56

###Explanation

What if we want to write a letter directly after a number without leaving a space, and what if this letter needed to be written after the number itself conflicts in its dots with one of the numbers? That’s what we’ll get to know in this lesson.

So, a letter may come directly after a number without a space between them and since some letters have a similar dots representation as some numbers, the letter sign is displayed before the similar character if it comes directly after a number. The letter sign is exclusive to braille and has no equivalent in regular writing.

The letters that resemble numbers and may confuse the reader are:

  • English lowercase letters from (a to i) have the same dots as numbers 1 to 9, and the letter j has the same dots as the number 0.
  • The Arabic letters that may cause confusion with numbers are the letter “Alef” (ا) with the number 1, the letter “Baa” (ب) with the number 2, the letter “Dal” (د) with the number 4, the kasrah sign (ٍ) with the number 5, the letter “Faa” (ف) with the number 6, the letter “Haa” (هـ) with the number 8, and the letter “Yaa” (ي) with the number 9, and the letter “Jeem” (ج) with the number 0.

If any of the aforementioned letters comes directly after any number without space, it must be preceded by the letter sign to prevent confusion for the reader and to facilitate writing it via the braille display.

But if any letter other than these letters comes directly after a number, it must be written and displayed without the letter sign, because there is no confusion with the numbers.

#### Example 3

The English letters from A to J, meaning the capital letters, are not preceded by the letter sign if they come after a number, because the capital letter sign – which is the dot 6 – prevents confusion.

Important note: The English language letters can only be displayed in the Arabic language table, but until now they cannot be entered by the display in braille module 1 table. You need to use the English language table or the computer Arabic table to be able to enter the English letters.

Any letter that comes after a number interrupts the number mode, whether this letter is preceded by the letter sign or not, and therefore, the number mode must be activated again when writing any number immediately after the letter.
